Further Information
The specimen found in-game is only listed as belonging to the genus Anomalocaris, however, it is most likely a portrayal of the type species, Anomalocaris canadensis.[1]
Anomalocaris is the name of a genus of extinct radiodont arthropods, with its' name meaning "abnormal shrimp". Its' type species is Anomalocaris canadensis. It was an apex predator during the Cambrian period, using its' raptorial facial appendages to feed on any creature slow enough for it to capture and crush.[2]
Anomalocaris, upon its' discovery, and long after, was often misidentified. Some of these initial misidentifications include phyllocarid crustaceans (a type of small, shrimp-like crustacean with a domed shell prolific in the Ordovician),[3] Tuzoia,[4] another species of marine arthropod present in the Burgess Shale, where Anomalocaris was first found, a species of jellyfish in the genus Peytoia,[5] the tail or appendages of the extinct arthropod Sidneyia,[6] an extinct sea sponge,[7] and many others.
