Bait
Bait is a class of consumables used to catch fish purchased at the Bait Shop. The player starts out with only the worm bait type, but 5 other baits can be unlocked at the Upgrade Shop as the player progresses through the game. The active bait can be changed at any time in the Tacklebox.
Bait stats
The main benefit associated with higher-tier bait is the ability to catch higher tiers of fish and fish with rarer qualities. Each bait has a unique table of probabilities associated with it that determine what qualities a caught fish can possess.
Worms are the only tier-limited bait, and are only able to catch tier 1 and 2 fish. All other bait can catch all tiers of fish. As such, if one is attempting to catch tier 3 fish of Normal quality for Journal completion, crickets should be used and not worms.
Bait upgrades
Bait licenses
Bait licenses are upgrades that allow the player to buy new and use new bait types. Once the license has been purchased, that bait type will be filled to the player's max bait level, and the new bait type will be available for purchase in the Bait Shop.

Trivia
- The
max_bait
stat is one of only two stats that can be functionally increased via modifying the player's save data, the other being rod luck. Increasing the max beyond 30 has no adverse side effects, and buying and using bait still functions as expected.
