Trivia
- The "Ancient!" title is a nod to the fact that the Coelecanth was once thought to be extinct, and retains a fairly primitive bodyplan compared to other lungfish.
Further Information
The species represented by the in-game specimen is Latimeria chalumnae, or the West Indean Ocean coelacanth. It is also sometimes referred to as the African coelacanth or gombessa.[1]
Latimeria is a genus of Latimeriid lungfish. Their type species is the extinct Coelacanthus granulatus. Until 1938, when an extant specimen of Latimeria chalumnae was discovered, the remaining Latimeriids were thought to have gone extinct during the K-Pg extinction event, around 66 million years ago.[1]
Being a species of early lungfish, the coelacalth is more closely related to humans than it is to ray-finned fishes such as herring, catfish, trout, etc.[2]
