Helicoprion is an extinct genus of eugenodont fish, which, despite its appearance, means that it isn't actually a species of shark, but instead a cartilaginous fish more closely related to modern-day chimaeras than sharks.[1]
The type species for Helicoprion is Helicoprion bessonowi. When it was initially discovered, the whorl was hypothesized to be placed on its upper jaw, much like this image.
Its appearance in-game is based on many older reconstructions of Helicoprion, particularly this image from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Most modern depictions place it more in line with other discovered eugenodont fishes, placing the whorl inside its lower jaw.
