Further Information
"Horseshoe crab" is a common name referring to any of the four extant species of the family Limulidae. These include Limulus polyphemus, Tachypleus tridentatus, Tachypleus gigas, and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda. The specimen featured in-game is a member of the species Tachypleus tridentatus, making it a Tri-spine horseshoe crab, a species native to Asia.[1]
Horseshoe crabs are arthropods, though not true crabs or crustaceans. Horseshoe crabs are instead chelicerates, which makes them more closely related to arachnids. They first appeared in the fossil record in the early Triassic period, around 215 million years ago.[2]
Horseshoe crabs are also extremely important in the process of developing vaccines and antibodies for medical use in humans and other animals due to the amebocyte cells in their blood, a blood-equivalent that fills their body cavity.[3]
