The species represented by the in-game specimen is Hirudo medicinalis, or the European medicinal leech.[1]
The medicinal leech is still used to this day both in reconstructive surgeries and to treat many conditions including varicose veins, osteoarthritis, and muscular cramping. Proteins in their mucous prevent blood clots, making them a useful animal to humans.[2]
