Size is a randomly-assigned property of fish. Each type of fish has an "average size" (not to be confused with the actual mean value of the size distribution, which is listed as "average size" under the stats for each fish), and the prefix applied to each fish depends on the quotient of the a fish's given size and the average size for its species.

Size distribution

Size is normally distributed, with a mean value equal to 1.25×average size, and a standard deviation equal to 0.55×average size. After the normal distribution is sampled, the absolute value is taken, and it is rounded to the nearest 0.01 (with a minimum size of 0.01).

Since Godot uses the Box-Muller transform, the maximum size deviation is 6.660 standard deviations, or 1.25+6.660×0.55=4.913. This makes the largest fish obtainable a 132.651-meter Colossal Leedsichthys.

Sell value

Size also influences sell value. Typically, larger fish sell for more, with the exception of fish in the 0.1 - 0.25x range selling for 1.75x. Note that the value multipliers do not line up directly with the size prefixes.
